Ajax AmsterdamTotal Football and the Barcelona Cantera

Team Espana is basically Barcelona plus 4. De Toekomst, the Ajax Amsterdam academy, enrols 200 boys at a time from the ages of 7 to 19. The emphasis is on passing accuracy and movement. La Maisa, Barcelona's cantera, also developed Argentina's Lionel Messi who arrived at the age of 14.

A striking characteristic of many of modern Spain's finest players is their height: the national team's preferred front five would include Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, and Villa, all of them under 6 feet.

English football's failure is the prioritisation of physique in identifying talent, ie "How tall is the player?"(Ian Hawkey-The Sunday Times)

Let us consider that:
Diego Maradona 5'5"
Lionel Messi 5'7"
Pele 5'8"
Landon Donovan 5'8"
Michael Owen 5'8"
Fabio Cannavaro 5'8"
Wayne Rooney 5'10"
Luis Figo 5'11"
Miroslav Klose 5'11"
Ronaldo 6'0"
Ronaldinho 6'0"
David Beckham 6'0"
Cristiano Ronaldo 6'0"

They are the among the best in the world.

Consider that:
Marlou Aquino 6'9"
EJ Feihl 7'0"

They are taller than most NBA players and yet they were crap players.

Go Ateneo Fight! Midget basketball is the Philippines' sporting future!
